Growing Rifts Between North Waziristan Taliban and TTP: A Precursor to Taliban Infighting?
The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) remains adaptive to evolving situation around it. It suffered enormous setbacks during Pakistani military operation against it since 2008. Its core component, the Mahsud Taliban, was driven out of their stronghold of Mahsud area of South Waziristan Agency (SWA) in October 2009 during military operation named “Rah-e-Nijat” (Urdu for Path to Salvation). Its other components in Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Orakzai and Darra Adamkhel suffered displacement after they were driven out of their respective areas. Most of these TTP components took refuge in adjoining provinces of Afghanistan, namely Nuristan, Kunar and Ningarhar, from where they conduct cross-border raids inside Pakistan. Similarly, Kurram Agency chapter of TTP broke away, after its leader Commander Fazal Saeed Utazai announced the formation of Tehrik-e-Taliban Islami Pakistan (TTIP).
However, the TTP-Mahsud chapter despite getting displaced was able to survive decapitation of its rank and file. It moved into Mirali area of North Waziristan Agency (NWA), which is inhabited by the Daur Tribe, which is the second biggest tribe in the Agency and inhabits the Tochi River Valley. Apart from Mirali area, Mahsud Taliban also took their residences in the area of Torikhel sub-tribe of Uthmanzai Wazir Tribe, which inhabits the area between Mirali and the northern border of SWA. Uthmanzai Wazir Tribe is the biggest tribe of the Agency and its sub-tribe Torikhel carries the reputation of being a ferocious sub-tribe. It has been seen that both Mirali area and Torikhel have served as abode of local and foreign militants, and has been a frequent target of US drone strikes.
