Une prise d'otages est toujours un événement dramatique. Lorsque l'issue en est fatale, personne n'en sort indemne, ni les familles ni ceux, souvent plus nombreux qu'on ne le pense, ayant travaillé à leur libération.

Enlevés en mai 2011 au Nord du Nigéria, Christopher McManus et Franco Lamolinara ont trouvé la mort hier, 08 mars 2012, abattus (par leurs ravisseurs selon la version officielle) durant une opération conjointe des forces spéciales britanniques et nigérianes.

Le T-BirD du jour est tout entier dévolu à ce drame.

Notre choix s'est porté sur deux types d'écrits. Les premiers présentent les événements ayant conduit à la mort du ressortissant britannique et de son compagnon d'infortune italien. Les seconds forment un panel aussi exhaustif que possible des questions qui se posent - elles sont nombreuses et pertinentes - au lendemain de cette opération.

A l'instar d'Alex Thurston (lire son billet d'opinion à ce sujet ici), nous somme fort peu enclins à prendre au pied de la lettre les déclarations du président nigérian Goodluck Jonathan lorsqu'il désigne Boko Haram comme l'instigateur du rapt et du double assassinat.

A kidnapping is always a dramatic event. And when it ends by the death of the hostages, no one gets out of it unhurt. Neither the families of the hostages, nor the numerous and anonymous ones who worked hard to get them free. Christopher McManus and Franco Lamolinara were kidnapped in Northern Nigeria in May 2011. They were killed yesterday 08 of March, 2012. A joint British-Nigerian operation failed to save their lives.

Our choice was a dual one. A first batch of articles summarizes (as of today) what is known of the events that lead to the death of both the British and the Italian hostages. A second (and final) batch tries to summarize all the questions that arose since then. As Alex Thurston did write is last post (to be reached here), we are highly suspicious of the claims made be Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, when he says Boko Haram has planned the kidnapping and thus provoked the death of the two hostages.
